I Could've Done Better Free Verse Sports Poem

Its my turn up to bat

my teammates say “good luck” as I walk out of the dugout

nervously,

I walk to the batter’s box

do a few practice swings

I look at the pitcher

nodding

I step up to the plate

ready

hands sweaty

staring at the pitcher's glove

knowing my team

is counting on me

9 to 9 is the score

1 inning left

I grip the bat

she throws the ball

I swing,

but miss

I step back

my team says

“you got this”

I can’t miss

she pitches again

I swing

the ball goes towards first

I sprint

I’m not going to make it

she catches the ball

I jog back

thinking I’ve let my team down

I could’ve done better
